Explanation of History

JIS is national standard established by the Competent Minister based on the Industrial Standardization Act. Before five years have passed from the date of establishment, revision, and confirmation, the JIS will be reviewed, and the Competent Minister will either revise, confirm, or withdraw the JIS.

“Established”

means it is newly established JIS as national standard. The 4 digit number on the right of the colon (：) shows the year of establishment.

“Revised”

means the JIS has technical changes. The 4 digit number on the right of the colon (：) is changed, and shows the year of revision.

“Confirmed”

means JIS has no technical changes. The current edition is still valid. The 4 digit number on the right of the colon (：) shows the year of establishment or latest revision, not the year of confirmation.

“Withdraw”

means the JIS is not valid. In some cases, the content is transferred to different JIS. Withdrawn JIS is not available from Webdesk.

Explanation of Equivalency

IDT

"identical"
JIS is identical to the International Standard if
a) JIS is identical in technical content, structure and wording, or
b) JIS is identical in technical content, although it may contain the minimal editorial changes specified in 4.2 of ISO/IEC GUIDE 21-1:2005.
The "vice versa principle" is fulfilled.

MOD

"modified"
JIS is modified in relation to the International Standard if technical deviations, which are permitted, are clearly identified and explained. JIS reflects the structure of the International Standard, but changes in structure are permitted provided that the altered structure permits easy comparison of the content of the two standards. Modified standards also include the changes permitted under identical correspondence.

NEQ

"not equivalent"
JIS is not equivalent to the International Standard in technical content and structure and any changes have not been clearly identified. No clear correspondence is obvious between JIS and the International Standard.
