| Standard title | Primary batteries - Safety of lithium batteries |
| Objective |
This standard specifies requirements and tests to ensure the safety of lithium primary batteries during intended use and reasonably foreseeable misuse. This standard is being revised to enhance the content of the standard, taking into account recent production and usage trends. The main revisions are as follows: - The order of terms has been changed from alphabetical to functional, and leakage (3.23) and valve actuation (3.24) have been added. - The previous standard defined rupture using the distance from the center of the battery to the released solid matter. This standard describes the state of rupture in accordance with the corresponding international standard. Furthermore, this standard also specifies allowable conditions for the release of internal material from a cell or component battery, and a method for evaluating the released energy, which were not specified in the previous standard. (6.2.7) - Because the equipment using batteries under test has shifted from equipment with four batteries in series to equipment with a 6 V circuit voltage, a simulation test procedure with a battery voltage of 6 V and a circuit current of 1 A has been specified. (6.5.10) - In light of the serious accidental ingestion accidents by infants and young children caused by coin-type primary lithium batteries with a diameter of 16 mm or more, the requirements for displaying safety symbols on the battery body to prevent accidental ingestion were expanded during the revision deliberations of the corresponding international standard from 20 mm or more in diameter to 16 mm or more in diameter for coin-type batteries. This standard also adds requirements for displaying symbols on the battery body for coin-type batteries with a diameter of 16 mm or more but less than 20 mm. (9.3) - There have been cases where general consumers have purchased industrial-use primary lithium batteries manufactured for incorporation into specific equipment and mistakenly charged them using a charger. In response to this, this Annex has been added, specifying measures to prevent the misuse of primary lithium batteries not intended for consumer replacement. (Annex G) |
