| Standard title | Carbon black for rubber industry-Fundamental characteristics-Part 1: Determination of iodine adsorption number |
| Objective |
This standard stipulates the method for determining iodine adsorption, one of the basic properties of carbon black used as a rubber compounding agent. This standard is being revised to enhance its content in light of recent trends in production and use. The main revisions are as follows: - The current standard stated ゛Method for Determining Iodine Adsorption (Titration Method).゛ However, since no test methods other than titration are described, this revision has changed it to ゛Method for Determining Iodine Adsorption,゛ and the English name has also been changed. - Regarding referenced standards, JIS K 6216-2 (Carbon black for rubber use - Common matters - Part 2: Standard carbon black for verification), which was abolished in 2016, has been deleted from the referenced standards. - A clause on terms and definitions has been added to align with the corresponding international standards. - Regarding units, the current standard used g and mg as units of mass and L and mL as units of volume. However, in this revision, the unit of mass has been unified to g and the unit of volume to mL. - Regarding instruments and equipment, we have added information on differences in the class of dispensers and burets with automatic zero adjustment functions to digital burets, and have made changes to align with applicable international standards. - Regarding reagents, the description of sulfuric acid has been adjusted to align with applicable international standards, and the mass fraction and density have been specified. Additionally, information on standard carbon black for calibration has been added, as JIS K 6216-2 has been abolished. - Regarding solution standardization, the current standard defined the constant 20 in equation (2) as the volume of the sodium thiosulfate solution. This was incorrect, and in line with the correction in the revised applicable international standard, the definition of constant 20 has been revised to the volume of the unstandardized iodine solution. Additionally, we have clarified that if the concentration C2 of the iodine solution is not within (0.023 64 ± 0.000 05) mol/L, adjustment should be repeated until it reaches the target value. - The test procedures have been adjusted to align with applicable international standards by adding temperature conditions that reflect actual laboratory conditions due to global warming, specifying sample preparation, and specifying the measurements used to summarize measurement results. - Regarding the method of summarizing test results, the current standard states that results should be rounded to one decimal place in accordance with JIS Z 8401, but does not specify whether rule A or B should be used. This has been revised to state that results should be rounded to one decimal place in accordance with rule B of JIS Z 8401. |
